| From Melbourne, Port
Phillip Bay forms a circle, with a regular car ferry service between Queenscliff and Sorrento every
2 hours during the day. A drive around the bay is about
200 kms and a very pleasant day trip. See pop-up map (75kb). |
The coastline west
of Melbourne to the South Australian border is the route of
the Great Ocean Road, one of Australia's most scenic highways.
You might like to rent a car to experience this drive at your
leisure or join a tour. See pop-up map (121kb).
| The Twelve Apostles stand testimony to the passing
of time and tides. One of these monoliths recently collapsed
after centuries of battering by the wind and seas. |

To the east
of Melbourne Phillip Island is home to Victoria's much
photographed fairy penguins, who come ashore each evening
to be welcomed by adoring onlookers from around the world.
They are very cute and national park rangers do their
best to see that the penguins are as little disturbed
as possible. |
| Further east towards the New South Wales border, the bays
and peninsulas of Wilsons Promontory, Ninety Mile Beach
and the Lakes area of Gippsland offer a wealth of landscapes
and views to explore. The fishing and holiday town of
Lakes Entrance is the main centre with many smaller towns
along the coast. See pop-up map (123kb). |
