Cottesloe
and Swanbourne
Cottesloe (Cott) is one of Perth's best family beaches and
a very trendy suburb with fashionable boutiques, cafes and
restaurants. It has low rise development only (so far) and
the Perth to Fremantle train line runs through the town centre
with Cott Station only 15 minutes stroll from the main beach
area. The beach usually has the best surf in winter with the
best breaks just south of the main beach towards Mosmon Park.
Otherwise it is a cool, clear and fairly calm escape from
the summer heat. Cott is also popular with teens and a bit
of a place to be seen. South of Cottesloe is popular with
kite surfers.
The next beach north
is Swanbourne Beach which is more open and has better body
waves. The northern border goes into Australian Army land
with an SAS base however the beach is open to the public unless
live firing exercises are being held. As council by-laws do
not apply this has been a popular nudist beach for many years.
It is is popular with families and commited naturists and
if you intend to hang about it is expected that you go nude
as well or the regulars can get quite upset and let you know
in no uncertain terms. However women often leave their bikini
bottoms on and this is quite accepted. Tourists taking photos
without asking permission first are not welcome. In January
or February, Swanbourne hosts the famous Nude Beach Olympics.
Competitions include nude beach volleyball, tug-of-war, three-legged
races, and even a "best bum" contest.

Scarborough is a popular surf
beach with sand breaks all along the beach. The section in front
of the hotels and cafes is patrolled by surf-lifesavers. You
can hire surfboards or just dive in and body surf. This is a
really popular beach for children to use body boards too as
there is no reef or rocks. Other areas along the coast have
reef and shore breaks. |

| The coastline off Perth has
many rocky reefs with abundant sealife including soft corals,
sponges, kelp gardens, stingrays and a variety of colourful
fish. |

At Hillary's
Boat Harbour, Underwater World has a walk through aquarium
with local fish varieties as well as large stingrays and
sharks. You can scuba dive in the tank and feed the fish.
There's also a touch pool for the kids.
