Melbourne is Australia's
second biggest city and the most European in architecture
and style. Recent modern landmarks like the Rialto Towers,
Victorian Arts Centre spire and opulent Crown Casino have
given the city a more modern aspect. The city prides itself
on its art, theatre, fashion and food. It is also very multicultural,
with large Greek and Italian communities. |

South Yarra is just south east of the CBD and has many fashionable
shops and restaurants along Toorak Road and Chapel Street. It's
well serviced by trams and train with cinemas and markets as
well. The location is ideal if you like being near the city
but in more suburban environs.
South of the city
to the east and west, St Kilda and Williamstown lead onto Port
Phillip Bay and Melbourne's calm beaches. You'll have to go
further out for surf beaches but they are fine for a swim on
a hot day or join the locals on an evening promenade. St Kilda
is quite cosmopolitan and has many eateries and cafes.
