Florence Falls, just south west of Darwin in the Litchfield National Park.

The NT is an excellent place to get close to genuine Aboriginal culture including trying bush foods such as Witchetty Grubs, or termite queens. About a quarter of the population is Aboriginal and large areas of the Territory are Aboriginal land. These communities can be visited by tourists but you may need permission and visitors are expected to show respect for sacred sites.

Kakadu and Arnhem Land

The Kakadu National Park is east of Darwin and many tours are available or you can self drive. There are large wetlands, some seasonal and the area often floods in the wet season, from November to March.

Yellow Waters lagoon in Kakadu has popular cruises with informative commentary from national park rangers. The Cooinda Lodge and campsite is adjacent to Yellow Waters. Arnhem Land is a huge area of aboriginal land further east with restricted visitor access. Roads are 4WD only in many areas.

Katherine

Katherine is the 3rd largest town in the NT (after Darwin and Alice Springs) and has all major services and amenities. It's built on the Katherine River and about 20 kms downstream of the impressive Katherine Gorge - probably the best and most accessible gorge (or canyon) in Australia.

Mataranka

Mataranka Hot Springs are just 15 kms off the main north/south highway south of Katherine. A tropical oasis with palm trees and thousands of flying foxes.
