| Brisbane
is one of Australia's fastest growing cities yet still retains
a kind of country town charm. The capital of Queensland, it
has a modern city centre and sprawling, green suburbs.
Brisbane enjoys the best weather of all the state
capitals with a sub-tropical climate and very mild winters.
Typical 'Queenslander' bungalows, which are built high on
posts to allow any cooling breeze underneath, are a feature
in some older suburbs.

The city has changed
a lot in recent years with a more diverse restaurant and entertainment
scene becoming established. Cafes, bars and al fresco dining
are open late serving cuisine from around the world. A local
specialty is Moreton Bay Bugs, from the bay just east of the
city. A cross between a lobster and a prawn, they look daunting
but taste delicious. |
| The south bank of the Brisbane
River has been transformed into an entertainment and parkland
area with beaches and gardens and is popular all year round. |
 |
The city centre is about 25 kms from the coast
but the best beaches are to be found out of Brisbane metropolitan
area. The Gold Coast and Surfers
Paradise are only an hour south by car and the Sunshine Coast (Caloundra,
Maroochydore, Noosa Heads) is an hour north.
In the city area the inner
suburbs of Fortitude Valley and The West End are where all the nightlife
actionis to be found. About 20 kms north of central Brisbane, the
coastal suburban area around Sandgate and Shorncliffe has a variety
of cafes, pubs, yacht and golf clubs and easy train access to the
city. Moreton Bay and Boondal Wetlands are popular recreational
areas.

Moreton
Island and North Stradbroke Island
 |
Closer to Brisbane, Moreton Island is about 60 kms long and
almost entirely national park, though there is a tourist
resort at Tangalooma. Regular vehicle ferries leave from
Brisbane and Redcliffe to the north. It takes about 2 hours
to get to the island from the city.
South-east of Brisbane is North
Stradbroke Island, only 20 kms offshore. The east coasts
of both islands are exposed to the blue Pacific Ocean
and sea conditions can be rough at times.
