Adelaide is known as 'the city
of churches' but it could also be called 'the city of restaurants
and cafes' with more seats per head than any Australian city.
Besides modern Australian cuisine; Greek, Italian and other
ethnic communities contribute to the diversity of Adelaide's
food scene. Locally famous pie carts at North Terrace and in
Franklin St have been serving pie floaters (meat pies floating
in a green pea soup) since 1915.
Adelaide has retained much of
its Victorian and Edwardian architecture and is a very pleasant
relaxed city with a large green belt around the city centre.

| Trams
are easy to use and fun to ride. The bus and train system
is also efficient and friendly. The seaside suburb of Glenelg
is a popular spot only 10 kms from Victoria Square in the
city centre. |

Between Grote and Cougar Streets, Adelaide's Central
Market has a great range of foods, cafes and craft shops
where you can buy that unique gift or souvenir. Next door
is little Chinatown with its many Asian shops and restaurants.
In the beautifully
restored 1920's railway station is Adelaide's Casino with
the usual games, including Aussie two-up, and several
bars.

Adelaide
Hills
From 10 to 40 kms east
of Adelaide, in the South Mount Lofty Ranges, also known as the
Adelaide Hills, nestle a host of small towns and villages with splendid
scenery and laid back locals. Craft shops and historical sites abound
and there's plenty of local produce to sample from jams and pickles
to gourmet restaurants.
The Mt Lofty summit is
really in Adelaide still and has good views over the city, hills
and out to sea.
Hahndorf
A unique German style village built by Lutheran settlers in the
early 1800's, Hahndorf has retained its German character with German
model trains and the world's biggest cuckoo clock! Hahndorf also
has a vibrant local art scene, and was home to the painter, Sir
Hans Heysen. The Hahndorf Academy on Main Street, has galleries
and artists' studios.
Norton
Summit
One of the summer retreats of the 19th century, the Scenic Hotel,
bult in 1873, is still a popular meeting place.

Mt
Barker
The largest town in the Hills, the Mount Barker summit itself, has
views east to the Murray River valley. Try the locally smoked fish
at Springs Smoked Salmon on Osborne Road.
